What is Lyssophobia?

During my web research I have discovered Lyssophobia has two meanings. It appears to be a combination of hydrophobophobia and maniophobia. Hydrophobophobia is the fear of rabies and Maniophobia is the fear of going insane (a.k.a. fear of insanity and fear of becoming mad.). When you put the two together, Lyssophobia means an intense terror of becoming mad, insane, or of having a nervous breakdown and/or having a fear of rabies or a fear of catching rabies. The prefix Lysso is Greek meaning madness, fury, rage, frenzy with relationship to rabies, as Lyssa is the former name for rabies. Lyssophobia is considered to be social phobia, which is discussed on the home page.

What causes Lyssophobia?

Lyssophobia could be caused by a number of reasons. For example, a person might have had a traumatic event occur in their life where they experienced someone (i.e., a family member or friend) who developed or died from a mental disorder. Another example would be if the person was or had been attacked by a rabid animal or witnessed someone else being attacked. These are only two possible causes. There are probably hundreds more causes.

What are the symptoms of Lyssophobia?

As with any phobia, the symptoms vary by person depending on their level of fear. The symptoms of Lyssophobia typically include extreme anxiety, dread and anything associated with panic such as shortness of breath, rapid breathing, irregular heartbeat, sweating, excessive sweating, nausea, dry mouth, nausea, inability to articulate words or sentences, dry mouth and shaking.

Can I take medicine for Lyssophobia?

Medicine can be prescribed for Lyssophobia. Please note that these medications can have side effects and/or withdrawal systems that can be severe. It is also importation to note that medicines do not cure Lyssophobia, at best they only temporarily suppress the systems. However, there are treatments for Lyssophobia, which include counseling, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, and Neuro-Linguistic programming. Please click on the link at the top of the page called “Treatment Information” to find out more information on these types of treatments.
